Tobey Maguire may be hoping to start another big action movie franchise. He seems to be considering a role in a big-screen version of Robotech. Robotech was a Japanese anime series in the 80s, and Warner Bros now owns the rights to it. So instead of swinging between buildings, we may see him flying a spaceship.

Women everywhere will be partying over this one. Actors George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio are in talks to co-star in a political drama called Farragut North. The movie is based on Howard Dean’s run for president in 2004. I don’t think most women will care what the plot line is, though. This will be a great movie and should go over real well.

Director and producer Stephen Spielberg will be honored at the next Golden Globe Awards. He will be given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contribution to the entertainment field. He’s no virgin when it comes to Awards shows, that’s for sure: he’s got six Golden Globes to his name already.

There’s a new biopic in the works - this time on the life and times of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. Who would be your ideal pick to portray Hef? Two names have been mentioned in relation to the project: Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio. I would think that the studio would be smarter to cast Leo, since Cruise seems to have outlived his approval with the public.

Plans to make the film Angels and Demons, the prequel to The Da Vinci Code, have been put on hold due to the writer’s strike. Apparently, the script isn’t quite ready, so the release date will be changed to sometime in 2009 rather than next year. Ron Howard is directing, and it is assumed that Tom Hanks will reprise his starring role from The Da Vinci Code

Chris Noth, the famous Mr. Big of Sex and the City is about to become a father. His representative announced this week that Noth and his girlfriend, Tara Wilson, are expecting their first baby. Noth has always been pretty tight-lipped when it comes to his personal life, and we won’t find much different - no other details have been released.

Writers and studios will go back to the table Permalink | No Comments Yet

The Writers Guild of America and the studios and networks have agreed to head back to the negotiation table. They will resume talks on the Monday after Thanksgiving, November 26th. Originally, the studios wanted writers to go back to work before they would resume negotiating, but maybe they’ve seen how serious the writers are. It probably has helped the writers’ cause that many actors have joined the writers on the picket lines.

Beowulf tops box office Permalink | No Comments Yet

Did you go to the movies this weekend? If you did, chances are you saw the computer-generated motion capture flick Beowulf - or maybe Jerry Seinfeld’s Bee Season or the Russell Crowe / Denzel Washington vehicle American Gangster. Those three movies were at the top of the box office this last weekend. I think Beowulf looks interesting, but I can’t help wishing it was a live action movie, rather than animated - or motion capture, whatever you want to call it.

Shrek 4 and a Christmas special Permalink | No Comments Yet

If your family loves Shrek as much as mine does, you’ll love this news. Not only is a Shrek 4 being planned for 2010, but we will be able to see our favorite green ogre in a Christmas special on ABC later this month. Shrek the Halls will air on ABC on November 28th, and all of the original cast members will be voicing their characters. Fun!

People’s Choice Awards add categories Permalink | No Comments Yet

The People’s Choice Awards are determined to be the awards show of the younger set. Not as young as the MTV Movie Awards maybe (there’s no favorite screen kiss category), but more hip and pop culture-oriented than the Oscars or Golden Globes. The awards that are chosen by the fans have added some new categories: Favorite Reunion Tour, Favorite Threequel, and Favorite Indie Movie. Of course, the threequels in the running are Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and The Bourne Ultimatum. Which of the threequels was your favorite?
